Men Tend To Lose In The Auto Insurance Gamble

It might not seem fair, but it's a fact that auto insurance is a gamble for the company that writes the policy. They have to assign "odds" to the chances for each driver to end up in an accident. Rates are then calculated based on these odds. This is where the not fair can come into play.

When the dice are rolled, it's men who tend to pay more for insurance. Since statistics bear out than men have higher claims than women, it's men who have to pay the price in higher premiums. The hit is even more noticeable for males under the age of 25.

And while the stats say a young man is more likely to get into a crash, stats are stereotypical by nature. With this in mind, not all male drivers under the age of 25 are bad behind the wheel. And there are things that young men can do to keep their rates as low as possible.

The best advice for younger male drivers is to keep their driving records squeaky clean. Avoid tickets and accidents by paying attention to the road, following laws and adhering to speed limits. A single slip up can cost a whole lot more than the ticket alone in the form of raised rates that will linger for years.

Beyond being perfect behind the wheel, young men can look into these things for keeping their rates more affordable:

Choose a car wisely. Sports cars will cost a young driver a lot. Look into cars that aren't high on the theft list, don't qualify as "high performance" and hold up well in crash tests. A smart automobile purchase can help keep rates lower.

Consider higher deductibles. The less the insurance company is exposed, the less the rates will be.

Keep grades high. Some companies offer price breaks for young drivers - males included - that maintain high grades and demonstrate an overall sense of responsibility.

Look into affiliation discounts. Sometimes clubs and organizations can provide price breaks through memberships. Honor societies, for example, and motor clubs are very good for keeping prices low.

Take driving courses. Defensive driving and driver's education classes that are completed successfully often come with the added bonus of a price break on insurance.

It may not seem fair, but it's a fact that younger men pay more for automobile insurance. Since the insurance company's risk is higher for clients that fall into the age and sex bracket, the rates are higher to cover the exposure. Staying clean and employing other discounts, however, can help offset the high cost of insurance.
