Insurance: After A Crash

It's something most drivers fear, but few are prepared for. The moments right after a traffic crash and even the hours and days following can be crucial in making sure everything is handled correctly from any medical attention that's required to being certain insurance claims can be made in a timely fashion.

Considering the fact that about one in every eight drivers is involved in a crash during any given year, being prepared is something that should be as important as making sure the car has gas. Knowing what to do immediately following a crash can not only make the insurance claim process easier, but it can also save lives.

The National Safety Council lists off 11 things drivers should do following an accident. They are:
* If possible, wait to stop a car in a place that's safe and legal to do so. It's almost never a good thing to come to a stop in a line of traffic.
* In state's where it's legal, move cars out of the roadway following a crash. In some places, this is not legal as it can hamper an investigation. If you're not sure what the laws are in your area, err on the side of caution and just make sure everyone is safe. If people can be removed from the vehicles, do so. If there's a question, wait for assistance.
* Make sure to turn off all cars involved in a crash.
* Make sure everyone involved is physically okay.
* Call the police, if it's necessary, and medical services personnel.
* Mark the accident scene with reflective triangles or other such devices. (Have these in your trunk for the eventuality). These can be valuable items if cars might remain in the traffic flow following a crash.
* Make sure to write down the names and contact information for any witnesses to the crash and also those in the other vehicle(s).
* Draw a diagram of the accident and write down the time, date and weather.
* Ask the other driver for their license and write down the number.
* Make sure to exchange information, but leave the "at fault" up to the proper authorities.
* Be certain to get a copy of the accident report from police.

Once the legal and safety concerns have been handled, call your insurance company to report the crash. This call should be one of the first, but it should not come prior to ensuring everyone is safe and taken care of physically. No insurance company worth its salt would want to be called first if an accident involves injuries.

No one wants to get into an auto accident, but sometimes they happen. Being prepared is important. Knowing what to do and how to handle the situation can save time, money and most importantly lives.
