Consider Crash Statistics To Understand Insurance Costs

If you've ever wondered why car insurance costs so much, even for a good driver, all it takes is a consideration of the statistics to make the reasons crystal clear. The simple fact of the matter is that insurance companies are playing a numbers game trying to balance their income with the probability that clients will get into crashes. When they keep estimates on the conservative side; they make money. If they go too low, they go bankrupt.

According to the National Safety Council, an estimated 41,000 people die in car crashes each year. About 2 million people live, but suffer injuries that will leave them disabled in one fashion or another. The fact is that no matter how good a driver a person is, they are at risk for a crash. The odds of that risk might be lowered, but it always exists.

Since drivers cannot control the actions of others on the road, it's a good idea for them to consider ways to protect themselves while behind the wheel. This is where smart defensive driving techniques can really help out. Remember, every other car on the road is a potential threat to your health and well being and you'll be one step ahead of the game.

Other smart tips from the safety council include:
* Buckle up. Seat belts save lives. In many states they're also the law. Don't start a car unless everyone - driver included - is properly restrained. Make sure young passengers have correctly installed safety seats, as well. There are no second chances.
* Don't drive too fast or too slow. The speed limit is set for a reason.
* Do not under any circumstance drink and drive. The risks are so high; it's just not worth running them.
* Keep an eye out for impaired drivers and stay back. You're better off being 10 minutes late somewhere than running the risk of being hit by trying to pass. If possible, turn off the road the driver is on and do call the police for assistance once you're in a safe location.
* Don't tail gate. This one can't be stressed enough.
* Always be aware of surroundings while driving. Keep an eye on drivers behind, in front of and to the side of you. These are your big threats while on the road. If you pretend there's a bubble around your car and try to maintain that bubble's distance from all other cars, you decrease your chances of trouble.

When it comes to driving accidents, sometimes there just isn't a second chance. Keeping your attention focused and yourself prepared to respond in the event of an emergency can mean the difference between a hit and a near miss. Shoot for the near miss by following simple defensive driving technique and help yourself avoid becoming one of those statistics.
