Car Insurance Can Even Protect Against The Inconsiderate

It's a sad but true fact that there are a whole lot of drivers out on the road who either don't care about the law or don't care to follow it. Tooling around each day without insurance, these people can be a driver's No. 1 nightmare if they happen to become involved in a crash with one.
Even though the law in every state in America requires a minimal amount of insurance for an automobile to be placed into service on the roads, these drivers don't follow those laws. This means those who happen to get into crashes with them involved will find themselves being stuck with the bills. And, even if the driver of the other car does have insurance, it won't always pay enough to cover the loss of the other driver not having correct coverage.

What can a driver do to make sure they're covered no matter what?

This is where underinsured and uninsured motorist insurance can really come in and save the day.

Considered optional coverage in most states, these two add ons to policies can really make a big difference in a crash where insurance either isn't present or its limits aren't enough to shake a stick at. By providing an extra blanket of coverage, these policy add ons are considered vital by many.

So what are these coverage types?

Uninsured motorist coverage takes the place of the other driver's liability coverage if he or she doesn't have it. This doesn't mean the other driver won't get into trouble with the law for not being properly insured; they will. But, it also means you won't have to eat the cost of the damage.

Underinsured motorist coverage is very similar, but in this case the other driver does have insurance. The problem is, they don't have enough to cover the damage that's been caused. Rather than you having to pay the difference, your own policy picks up where the other driver's left off.

Although these two types of insurance are considered optional in most locales, they are highly recommended for a lot of good reasons. Generally not terribly expensive to add on, they are worth a good hard look when buying a policy. In general, add ons that provide coverage where it really might be needed are considered good buys. And since so many drivers on the road either don't have insurance, or don't have enough of it, these two coverage options can combine to make sure you're as protected as possible for any eventuality.
